An arm lift surgery performed at Metro Detroit’s Straith Clinic, is done to reduce excess fat and skin from under the upper arm. The procedure known as a brachioplasty involves removing skin and fat by excision and is typically performed by cosmetic and plastic surgeons. Arm fat reduction may also include an arm liposuction, which removes fat through the suction assisted method.

During the arm lift surgery, liposuction of the upper arm may be performed as the first step. Next, a long strip of skin and fat is excised from the inner arm. The excision starts in the axilla and can extend down to the elbow. The scar from this surgery is generally visible, but will be hidden when the upper arm is against the body.

What to expect from an arm lift/fat removal surgery:

  • Anesthesia: Usually local with IV sedation.
  • Length of surgery: 2 to 3 hours.
  • In/Outpatient: Generally out-patient in our plastic surgery clinic operating room suite or in a hospital setting.
  • Recovery: Back to work 1 to 2 weeks. More strenuous activity: 4 to 8 weeks. Fading and flattening of scars: 6 months to 2 years.

Frequently asked patient questions about the arm lift/fat reduction surgery:

Q1: What happens in the arm lift/fat reduction postoperative period?

There will be some discoloration and swelling of the upper arm for two to three weeks and possibly longer. Some numbness may be present around the operated areas. The intensity and duration of these conditions vary with each individual.

Q2: When are the sutures removed?

All sutures are generally removed by a surgeon in seven to fourteen days.

Q3: When can I take a shower?

Usually, a shower can be taken two to three days after your arm lift surgery. Your surgeon may change these instructions.

Q4: When can I resume my social activities?

Normally, full social and employment activities can be resumed two to three weeks after the arm lift/fat removal surgery. Strenuous exercise and activities such as sports should be avoided for six to eight weeks. The healing process and your occupation may cause the length of time to vary.
