Chin surgery, also referred to as a chin implant and chin augmentation is performed to improve the basic shape and size of the chin and the balance between the face and the nose. This procedure is technically known as augmentation mentoplasty. During cosmetic chin surgery, an implant is inserted through a small incision under the chin. This enlarges the chin and provides a better profile for the face. Patients with a receding chin or those who feel that their chin is too small or weak are the best candidates for a chin implant surgery.

Chin implants are generally inserted by a plastic surgeon specializing in chin augmentation surgery. However, oral surgeons may also perform a chin surgery, especially when the patient requires a bite correction.

What to expect from chin implants and chin surgery

  • Anesthesia: Usually local with IV sedation.
  • Length of chin surgery: 30 minutes.
  • In/Outpatient: Out-patient in our accredited chin augmentation operating room suite.
  • Recovery: Back to work: 3 to 7 day. Strenuous activity/contact sports: 6 to 8 weeks. Normal appearance: 2 to 4 weeks.
  • Duration of Results: Permanent

Frequently asked questions regarding the chin implant surgery

Q1: What happens in the postoperative period?

There will be some discoloration and swelling of the face and chin for approximately seven to ten days. Some numbness may be present around the operated areas. The intensity and duration of these conditions vary with each individual. Dressings and sutures are removed by your cosmetic chin surgeon five to seven days after surgery.

Q2: When can I resume my social activities?

Normally, full social and employment activities can be resumed three to seven days after a chin surgery. Strenuous exercise and activities should be avoided for ten days. Body contact sports should be avoided for six to eight weeks. The healing process and your occupation may cause the length of time to vary.
