Nose plastic surgery, also referred to as a nose job, nasal plastic surgery, or correction of a deviated septum, are popular procedures performed at the Straith Clinic. Technically known as a rhinoplasty, this procedure can simultaneously correct the function and improve the appearance of the nose. A septoplasty is often performed at the same time as a rhinoplasty in order to reconstruct a deviated septum and to improve breathing.

Our nose plastic surgeons will make incisions on the inside or outside of the nose in inconspicuous areas. The internal structure is then changed by altering the cartilage and correcting the bone. These maneuvers help to reshape the nose into a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. The septum and nasal structures obstructing breathing are corrected to improve breathing as well as to straighten nasal deviations. During the postoperative period, the skin readjusts itself over the newly contoured bone and cartilage.

At the Straith Clinic, we understand that no two patients are alike and therefore, no two nose surgeries are alike. Meeting the unique needs of our patients coupled with our knowledge, experience, and training is what separates us from other nose plastic surgeons in Detroit, Michigan.

Frequently asked questions about nose jobs and cosmetic nose surgery:

Q1: At what age can a rhinoplasty and/or septoplasty be performed?

Nose surgery can be performed on patients as young as fifteen years old depending on the patient's physical stage of development and emotional maturity.

Q2: Will there be scars?

Depending on the cosmetic surgery technique used, small external scars may be present at the base of the nose. These scars become almost invisible. The majority of the incisions are placed inside the nose during nose surgery.

Q3: What happens during the nasal plastic surgery postoperative period?

Our nose plastic surgeons will apply a splint immediately after surgery, which is left in place for seven days. Patients should then wear the splint at night for four to six weeks to minimize swelling. You will experience some discomfort with breathing and your nose may seem "stuffed up" due to the swelling of the nasal tissue after surgery. "Black eyes" plus swelling of the lids and nose will be present for seven to fourteen days or longer. External sutures will be removed within the first week. Some numbness may be present around the operated areas after nose surgery. The intensity and duration of these conditions vary with each individual. The nasal tip drops to its permanent position in three to six months. Although your "nose job" generally looks better after two to three weeks, it usually continues to improve for many months. The nose does not have its permanent appearance until one year after surgery. Minor adjustments or revisions are sometimes desirable and may require additional nose surgery.

Q4: When can I wash my hair and/or use makeup?

The hair may be washed after the splint has been removed. If you wish to wash your hair sooner, ask our nose plastic surgeons for instructions. Facial makeup may be applied to cover up bruising anytime after surgery, but not on any external incisions.

Q5: When can I resume my social activities?

Normally, full social and employment activities can be resumed seven days after a rhinoplasty/septoplasty nose surgery. Strenuous exercise and activities should be avoided for three to four weeks. Body contact sports should be avoided for at least two months. The healing process and your occupation may cause the length of time to vary.
