Using the latest techniques, our plastic surgeons perform male breast reduction surgery in Metro Detroit’s state of the art AAAHC accredited surgical center. Enlarged male breasts, called gynecomastia, a condition with men that can be the result of hormonal changes, genetic conditions, disease or the use of certain drugs. Most often, male chest reduction is performed to reduce the size of male breasts which often occurs in puberty. During puberty, mild enlargement of male breast tissue occurs but usually disappears over a period of one to two years. When it persists, its appearance can cause emotional discomfort, embarrassment and impair self confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition. Male breast enlargement is fairly common as it affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men. Male breast reduction surgery at the Straith Clinic will reduce breast size and flatten and enhance chest contours.

In cases where gynecomastia is primarily the result of excess fatty tissue, liposuction techniques may be used. This requires insertion of a cannula, a thin hollow tube, through several small incisions. The cannula is moved back and forth in a controlled motion to loosen the excess fat, which is then removed from the body by vacuum suction. If excess glandular breast tissue or excess skin is the primary cause, our surgeons will excise and reposition tissue for a more natural male contour. An incision is made following the lower part of the nipple and the excess breast tissue is removed. This excision may be performed alone or in conjunction with liposuction.

Most male breast reduction surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis. Time in surgery is typically an hour and a half, but more extensive procedures may take longer. After male breast reduction surgery, you will feel some discomfort. A pressure bandage is worn for approximately three weeks to reduce swelling, and you may return to work within a few days. The healing process and your occupation may cause the length of time to vary.
